005 {theta} dun loireag

Technically speaking, you can't track whether someone is online or not if you haven't exchanged member addresses with them. Technically speaking, when you're a hacker, especially one as experienced as Myde, member addresses don't mean shit. He's in the middle of a yawn and his favorite soap opera when his phone buzzes. By glancing over, he can see the notification telling him that "bob24" has logged in.

He sighs. "Time to get to work, yeah?" He stretches langorously. "Thank God for DVR." He turns off the TV with the remote perched on his knee, scratches his nose, picks up the remote, stands up, scratches his ass, grabs his phone, puts the remote down in its place, and wanders over to his laptop.

He's had Vilayat parked in Dun Loireag for the past week. Booooooooooring as fuck, but there's not a thing he could do about it. He needs to be lying low and it's his turn to play with the boss' new toy, so Dun Loireag it's been. At least it's pretty. And has grunties. They may be cuties, but he's long since raised all of the types, including some that weren't fully incorporated into the game but whose data has been floating around anyway, so meh.

If he couldn't understand Xehanort's fascination, and if he wasn't 9001% certain the kid gets hard for shelving and coding, Myde'd assume that he's got a crush on this poor girl. But, no. Myde gets it. No, really. He does. He does. She's weird. And something of a wild card. And, honestly, very possibly a wrench, stumbling around in the wings to trip over a pixel and come crashing into the carefully improvised machinations of their great and mysterious plan. And Xehanort gets hard for1 cool plans, too, so, hell, maybe he does have a crush on her. On the idea of her. And that's why they have to humor her. Because the boss thinks she's a neat idea.

Boooooooooooooooooring. Well, okay. It's more interesting than normal. But Myde still doesn't care. He's been hanging with this crowd because it's been something to do, because it's something he hasn't done yet, something beyond the game and in the game and a different kind of game, all at once. Not to show what dark, ancient corners of the Internet he's been2 lurking in or anything, but, yo, I heard you like gaming, so I put a game in your game so you can game while you game -- that kind of thing. It's sure as hell more captivating than playing the World as written in the guides.

But, come on. A girl on a quest to save her brother('s player character), clumsily but cutely finding herself in the middle of a mystery and unearthing the truth? What is this, a shoujo anime?

Booooooooooooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnggggg.

The answer you seek lies with the Sanjh Saravali raga.

Maybe things happen that aren't meant to help understand. Maybe things happen because they're meant to
hide.

Those are her clues. Xion wrote them all down in her diary. She has an exceptional memory, but she wants the extra insurance against her insecurities. This is the exact wording. Plus, it's an easy way to keep track of her research notes and thought processes.

Next to the first clue, her handwriting scrawls: Raga -- "one of the melodic modes used in Indian classical music." Sanjh Saravali -- a raga made by Vilayat Khan. Vilayat is underlined three times, because that matches up with a character name in the World. An arrow branches off from the name, leading to last server: Θ Dun Loireag.

You want to unfreeze an account. An account frozen due to a virus. To remedy the virus, you have to find the virus' source... and that's where I've pointed you.

Xion grips her controller and unknowingly leans in closer to her screen. She doesn't know if this Vilayat person has logged in or anything, but... She's not leaving until she's scoured every corner of the Root Town for him.

She finds him on the other side of the map, over behind the grunty corral. The name Vilayat hovers over a Wavemaster dressed in shades of blue and sporting a hairstyle she doesn't remember seeing before. He's sitting on the ground, idle, and Xion hesitates. How long has he been AFK...? How much longer will he be? She isn't sure what to do, so she hovers uncertainly for a moment before he abruptly returns.

"Yo." Vilayat stretches. "Can I help you? Oh, wait, lemme guess. You wanna take screencaps of my character sitting here in the grass."

Xion stares.

"Can't blame you. Very picturesque. Here, I'll hold still for you."

"No, um -- " Oh. Oh no, she forgot to use text instead of voice. She freezes for a moment.3 "I wanted to ask you a question. For a friend. I'm -- borrowing his character. He's. Sick."

The Wavemaster props his elbows up on his knees and drops his chin into his hands. Xion didn't even know the characters could do that. "I'm all ears, zombie,"4 he chirps. "Er, I mean. Lady. Dude. Whatever."

Xion doesn't even know how to react to that. "My friend, he's letting me borrow his character because there's something wrong with mine." The more she lies, the more she gets a bad feeling about this whole thing. But what else can she do? If this person is the source of the virus somehow, how can she go about finding more about it subtly? It's almost too late now to make something else up and try to become friends with him in hopes he'll tell her all about it. Besides, that'd take too long. She wants to fix Sora's character as quickly as possible. "It's been hit with a virus. And, um. I heard that you're an... expert. On viruses in the World."

"Oh, sure," Vilayat drawls. "You've been sent to the right person, alright. Whatcha need, my polyphonic friend?"

Wh... at? Xion takes a moment to scribble out how she thinks that word is spelled so she can look it up later. "Um. I was hoping that you'd... know how to fix it?"

Vilayat outright laughs. "Wow, do you even know what you're asking when you say that? Do you know how many viruses there are5 out there? How am I supposed to know which one it is? Just because I'm an expert doesn't mean I know everything."

Xion finds herself balking. "I..." He has... a good point. A surprisingly good one. Why didn't she think of that before? What should she say now? How is she going to fix this?

"You're the one who put up that Board post though, right?" Vilayat stretches. "I saw that. Remember the name. Thought it was funny. The name, I mean, not the post."

"Yeah." Wait -- Wait, wait, wait, no, stay consistent. "I mean -- No. I'm not... the one who made the post. But I'm the one he was talking about."6

"Mmhm. Well. Just so happens, you're in luck." A smilie face emote pops up over Vilayat's head, and it winks before it disappears. "I have an idea which virus it is."

Xion almost jumps forward and shakes her monitor. "Really?!"

"Yup, yup. Sorry for giving you a hard time~." He hums to himself for a moment. "There's just one itsy bitsy problem."

Xion goes very, very still. "Wh... What is it?"

"Need some time to parse through the different options, y'know? Can't tell you right now."

"Oh. That's it?"

"Mmmmmhmm. That's it."

She exhales. She may not be able to tell if this guy is pulling her leg and being rude on purpose, but at least he isn't like Targetlock. Her expression darkens even at the memory of her last conversation with him.

Vilayat stretches his arms high above his head. "We should exchange emails. Y'know, so I can let you know when I find something out. So your friend doesn't have to keep playing monkey in the middle when he's not sick any more."7

"Oh -- Oh, that's right..." There's no harm in that, right? She can use a spare email account that she made for junk mail. She gives him the address and he tells her his8, and then she triggers Axel's character to bow. "I can't thank you enough, really."

The Wavemaster, er, well. Waves. "No problem, no problem. I've got too much spare time anyway. Anything to help out my fellow players." A text bubble pops up: (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜

Finally. She's getting somewhere. It's looking like dealing with Targetlock was worth it after all.

"Hey, hey. Before you go, one word of advice?"

Hearing his voice again pulls her out of her thoughts. "Huh?"

"Go play." Another text bubble: (´∇`*)ノ "You're so tense I can hear it way the hell over here on my side of the computer. This is a game, y'know? Go get some friends together and run through a couple of dungeons or something."

"O-Oh. Right..." Xion nods, and then remembers that he can't see her. She hits the trigger that makes Axel's character nod. "Thanks."

The Wavemaster waves again. "Mmhmm. Byyeee~."

1 What? Oh, right. Sorry, Myde went ahead and logged in somewhere around here. It's so boring that it wasn't even worth mentioning. Especially since he's been sitting around. Doing nothing. Waiting. Back.
2 Oh, and he just sent an email to Braig, too. "The zombie just rolled into town. I can see his stupid porcupine head from across the map. I think today's the day~ (´◇`) ンー" Y'know. Work things. Also not really worth mentioning. Back.
3 Myde yawns. Back.
4 Oops. Back.
5 Poor kid. Should Myde feel bad? Probably. Does he? ... Only a little. Back.
6 Sloppy. Back.
7 He's so nice, right? Reminding her of her story. Hey, if you're going to lie and you're not going to keep your story consistent, you need all the help you can get~. He supposes not everyone can be an experienced liar like him. Look at that, he's not even properly lying. Yeah, he knows what the virus is, because he's the one who made it, but he needs to be able to pretend he doesn't know what he's talking about. It's his favorite pastime. Back.
8 Also a spare email address. Back.
